Guide to Streaming with OBS

Getting Started

  1. Download OBS Studio (here is the link: https://obsproject.com) and install it to your PC.

IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that you can only use the OBS Studio version with our platform, the classic version will not work since it does not accept the RTMP.
  2. Check your background: Before you start streaming, check if your environment fits within the gaming background recommendations that might affect the final quality of streaming service that your users will experience. When streaming, make sure that your face is clearly seen, use a green screen or any good background.

  3. Create some motion while adjusting video and stream settings in OBS. Run a test stream in OBS using some dynamic video as a capture source. Avoid capturing your desktop, black screen, or any static source, since they will allow you to detect potential troubles with stream settings.
  4. Register on Play2Live: Go to Play2Live and sign up or log in to your P2L account. If you are new to P2L, please visit this link for detailed instructions on signup: Registration
  5. Upon your first signup, you will be shown a pop-up window with an URL and stream key generated for you by the system. Make sure you store it in a safe place. You will later need the key and URL to connect OBS to your P2L account.

  6. Check your internet speed: Make sure you have at least 20 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speed. To test your internet connection speed, scroll down to the bottom of this page for the Check Internet Speed instructions.

Step-by-Step Guide to Setup OBS

Below you will find detailed guidelines to configuring your OBS to start streaming on P2L.

IMPORTANT: Running a test stream in OBS and previewing it in P2L control panel is recommended during setup. HOWEVER, DO NOT CHANGE ANY SETTINGS WHEN PUBLISHING THE STREAM (SAMPLE RATE, FPS, PROFILE, ETC) ON P2L. PLEASE CONTACT TECHNICAL SUPPORT STAFF IN URGENT CASES.

  1. Once downloaded and installed, run OBS and adjust it so it works properly with our platform. If you are using Windows, you can right click on OBS and select Run as Administrator so it automatically grants the software permissions to capture your games.

  2. Open Settings by clicking the Settings button in the lower right corner.
  3. In the left navigation panel, select Stream. In the Stream Type drop-down menu select Custom stream service.

  4. Obtain your stream key. OBS does not support direct login to P2L, so you will need to connect OBS to Play2Live by acquiring a special “stream key” from P2L. This is the key you copied and saved upon the first signup to P2L (see p.2 of this guide). You can also obtain the stream key in the Control Panel of your P2L account. To get your stream key, follow these steps:

    • Open P2L in your browser and select Control Panel in the drop-down menu arrow next to your Username in the upper right corner.

    • Select Stream key from the left navigation menu. This will open the Stream key page with the URL and stream key generated for you by the system. Copy your stream key.

  5. Once you have the stream key, go back to OBS. Open OBS Settings by clicking the Settings button in the lower right corner and select Stream. Paste the key in the Stream Key field.

  6.  You will also need to copy and paste the URL the system provided to you together with the stream key. To do this, go back to the Stream Key page of your P2L account and copy the URL provided.

  7. Now switch to OBS and paste the URL in the URL field of the Stream section.

  8. Congratulations, you're technically ready to stream with OBS on P2L now! Next, you will need to adjust a few technical settings in OBS. Go to the Output section and select the Advanced mode in the Output Mode drop-down menu.

  9. This will display the Advanced Output settings window. We recommend setting the Profile option to Main. However, selecting Baseline will work, too.

  10. In the Rate Control drop-down menu, select VBR (variable bitrate) or CBR (constant bitrate). However, our recommendation would be to go for VBR.

  11. Set your video Bitrate to 5000-8000 kbit if you want to run a full HD video. Basically, your bitrate depends on the type of your content and its resolution, so if you are going to stream a video with  resolution of 1280x720, then anything around 3000-4000 kbit should be totally enough.

  12. Set the Keyframe Interval to 4 seconds.

  13. Select your Encoder format: H264 or X264. All the parameters you configured above will apply in both cases. However, other encoder options are possible depending on your hardware. For example, you may need to select NVENC.

  14. Next, disable the Use B-frames checkbox.

  15. Now go to the Audio section and set Sample Rate to 44.1khz.

  16. Go to the Video section and set your Resolution to 1280х720 and 1920х1080. As for the FPS, you may set it to 25, 30 or 60. However, we recommend you to go for 30 FPS. You don't always need 60 FPS to play 8-bit games.

  17. For further instructions on video capture and stream source settings, please see applicable user documentation of your streaming software. Now, when you're done with all the adjustments, you may want to host a few practice streams.
NOTE: If there is any trouble with video or stream settings, you will see an error message under the Video player in the Control Panel of your P2L account right after you click Publish Stream.

  18. Also, you may need to check your internet connection speed. To test your internet speed, follow the instructions below.

    Check Internet Speed

NOTE: Keep in mind that your internet speed must be at least 20 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. Use WIFI in rare cases, while wire internet connection is preferred.

    1. Open  https://speedtest.net in your browser and select Change Server.

    2.  Find Amsterdam.

    3. Run the test by clicking Go.
